What is Qi Gong?

clipart4459093_1.png

Qi (Chi): Life Force or Energy

Gong (Kung): Skill (to be cultivated or mastered)

Qi Gong (氣功), meaning "energy work" or "cultivating energy," is a powerful and ancient Chinese practice designed to balance and strengthen the body’s vital life force — known as Qi (pronounced “chee”). Rooted in Taoist philosophy and Traditional Chinese Medicine, Qi Gong has been practiced for thousands of years as a holistic system for health, vitality, and spiritual development.

At its core, Qi Gong combines gentle movement, breath control, and focused awareness to create harmony between body, mind, and spirit. It’s suitable for all ages and fitness levels, and it can be practiced either as a moving meditation or in stillness.

The Core Principles of Qi Gong

  • Qi (Energy): Qi is the life force or energy that flows through all living beings. Qi Gong is designed to optimize this energy, ensuring it flows freely and evenly throughout the body. This energy can also be cultivated (accumulated) and stored in our Dan Tian and body.

  • Yin and Yang: Qi Gong emphasizes balancing the complementary forces of Yin and Yang—rest and activity, soft and strong, rising and sinking—to maintain equilibrium in both the body and mind. This concept is embodied by the practice: alternating between Active and Passive phases during Qi Gong or Meditation, or by emptying the Mind and Body to the be full of Qi etc...

  • Song (Relaxation): True Qi Gong practice involves releasing unnecessary tension and mental distractions. Song is relaxation without collapse—The art of releasing unnecessary tension while maintaining skeletal structure and alignment. The state of Song allows energy to flow freely and promotes deep relaxation while maintaining mental clarity.

  • Mind  or Intention (Yi):
Awareness or mindfulness is central to Qi Gong which can help to guide and cultivate the flow of energy within the body.  We need to Relax or Song the Yi (not cling and focus intensely) just like how we relax the body to create a deep sense of calm, openness and clarity necessary for Qi development.
